[893] **That Buddha, the independent one, the impartial one (taṃ buddhaṃ asitaṃ tādiṃ):** "Buddha" — he is the Blessed One, the Self-become (sayambhū), without a teacher, who by himself fully awakened to the truths among dhammas unheard of before; therein he attained omniscience and attained mastery over the powers.
"Buddha": in what sense is he the Buddha? He is the Buddha as one who has awakened to the truths. He is the Buddha as the awakener of the people. He is the Buddha through omniscience. He is the Buddha through seeing all. He is the Buddha through direct knowledge (abhiññeyyatā). He is the Buddha through having blossomed. He is the Buddha as one reckoned to have destroyed the taints (āsava). He is the Buddha as one reckoned to be without mental defilements (upakkilesa). He is the Buddha as one absolutely free of lust (rāga). He is the Buddha as one absolutely free of hatred. He is the Buddha as one absolutely free of delusion. He is the Buddha as one absolutely without defilements (kilesa). He is the Buddha as one who has gone by the one-way path (ekāyanamagga). He is the Buddha as one who alone fully awakened to the unsurpassed perfect self-awakening (sammāsambodhi). He is the Buddha because of having dispelled non-understanding, because of having obtained understanding.
"Buddha": this name was not made by a mother, not made by a father, not made by a brother, not made by a sister, not made by friends and companions, not made by kinsmen and blood relations, not made by ascetics and brahmins, not made by deities. This name "Buddha" is a name pertaining to the culmination of liberation (vimokkhantika), a designation arising from realization (sacchikā paññatti) on the part of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, at the foot of the Bodhi tree together with the obtaining of the knowledge (ñāṇa) of omniscience — thus, "that Buddha."
