[946] **One should dispel it, [knowing:] "This is the faction of the Dark One (Kaṇha)."** *The Dark One*: he who is Māra — the Dark One (Kaṇha), the Overlord (Adhipati), the Ender (Antagū),¹ Namuci, the Kinsman of the Heedless (Pamattabandhu). *One should dispel it, [knowing:] "This is the faction of the Dark One"*: one should abandon it, dispel it, make an end of it, bring it to non-existence, [knowing:] "This is the faction of the Dark One, the faction of Māra, Māra's snare, Māra's hook, Māra's bait, Māra's domain, Māra's torment,² Māra's pasture, Māra's bond." Thus too, *one should dispel it, [knowing:] "This is the faction of the Dark One."* Or else: one should abandon it, dispel it, make an end of it, bring it to non-existence, [knowing:] "This is the dark faction, the faction of Māra, the unwholesome (akusala) faction, giving rise to suffering (dukkha), ripening in suffering, leading to hell, leading to the animal realm, leading to the realm of hungry ghosts." Thus too, *one should dispel it, [knowing:] "This is the faction of the Dark One."* Therefore the Blessed One said: One should not commit theft, should not speak falsehood; one should suffuse with loving-kindness beings frail and firm. When one should know turbidity of mind, one should dispel it, [knowing:] "This is the faction of the Dark One."
