[952] **Wisdom (paññā)**, in the phrase *having placed wisdom in front, with beautiful rapture (kalyāṇapīti)*, means: that which is wisdom, understanding, investigation, thorough investigation, investigation of dhammas … non-delusion, investigation of dhammas, right view.
*Having placed wisdom in front*: here someone conducts himself having placed wisdom in front — having wisdom as his banner, having wisdom as his standard, having wisdom as dominant; abounding in investigation, abounding in thorough investigation, abounding in scrutiny, abounding in close scrutiny; dwelling with things made clear; practicing in accordance with that, given much to that, giving weight to that, bent toward that, sloping toward that, inclining toward that, resolved upon that, having that as dominant — thus too he has "placed wisdom in front."
Or else: when walking, he understands, "I am walking"; when standing, he understands, "I am standing"; when sitting, he understands, "I am sitting"; when lying down, he understands, "I am lying down"; or however his body is disposed, he understands it accordingly — thus too he has "placed wisdom in front."
Or else: he is one who acts **clearly comprehending** in going forward and returning; he acts clearly comprehending in looking ahead and looking away; he acts clearly comprehending in bending and stretching; he acts clearly comprehending in wearing the outer robe, the bowl, and the robes; he acts clearly comprehending in eating, drinking, chewing, and tasting; he acts clearly comprehending in defecating and urinating; he acts clearly comprehending in walking, standing, sitting, sleeping, waking, speaking, and keeping silent — thus too he has "placed wisdom in front."
*With beautiful rapture*: the **rapture** and gladness that arises by way of recollection of the Buddha is beautiful rapture; the rapture and gladness that arises by way of recollection of the Dhamma, by way of recollection of the Saṅgha, by way of recollection of virtue, by way of recollection of generosity, by way of recollection of deities, by way of **mindfulness of breathing (ānāpānasati)**, by way of recollection of death, by way of mindfulness directed to the body, by way of recollection of peace, is beautiful rapture. Hence: "having placed wisdom in front, with beautiful rapture."
