[976] **Companions in the holy life** (sabrahmacārī), in the phrase "one should break down barrenness towards companions in the holy life," means: those who share a single formal act (ekakamma), a single recitation (ekuddesa), and an equal training (samasikkhātā). "One should break down barrenness towards companions in the holy life": one should break down the state of a stricken mind (citta), the state of barrenness that has arisen, towards companions in the holy life; one should break down the five kinds of mental barrenness (cetokhila); one should break down the three kinds of mental barrenness as well — one should break, break down, and shatter the barrenness of lust (rāga), the barrenness of hatred, and the barrenness of delusion.
