[148] Then the Blessed One, having rebuked the bhikkhunī Thullanandā in many ways, gave a talk on the Dhamma befitting and appropriate to that matter, and addressed the bhikkhus:
"Bhikkhus, formerly the bhikkhunī Thullanandā was the wife (pajāpatī) of a certain brahmin, and there were three daughters: Nandā, Nandavatī, and Sundarīnandā. Then, bhikkhus, that brahmin, having died, was reborn in a certain goose-womb, and his feathers were all made of gold. He gave them one feather each. Then, bhikkhus, the bhikkhunī Thullanandā, thinking, 'This goose gives us only one feather each,' seized that king of geese and plucked him bare of feathers. His feathers, growing back again, turned out white.
"So then, bhikkhus, the bhikkhunī Thullanandā, through excessive greed, was deprived of the gold; now she will be deprived of the garlic."
