[163] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling among the Sakyans at Kapilavatthu, in the Nigrodha Park (Nigrodhārāma). Then Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī approached the Blessed One; and having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, she stood downwind and said: "Blessed One, womankind is foul-smelling."
Then the Blessed One, saying, "Let the bhikkhunīs take up the use of water for ablution (udakasuddhika)," instructed, encouraged, inspired, and gladdened Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī with a talk on the Dhamma. Then Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī, having been instructed, encouraged, inspired, and gladdened by the Blessed One with a talk on the Dhamma, paid homage to the Blessed One, circumambulated him keeping her right side toward him, and departed. Then the Blessed One, on that account, in that connection, having given a talk on the Dhamma, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow water for ablution for bhikkhunīs."
