[304] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time bhikkhunīs were performing services for householders (gihiveyyāvacca). Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … criticized, denounced, and spread it about: "How can bhikkhunīs perform services for householders?" …
"Is it true, bhikkhus, that bhikkhunīs are performing services for householders?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "Bhikkhus, how can bhikkhunīs perform services for householders? Bhikkhus, this is not for the arousing of confidence in those without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Whatever bhikkhunī should perform a service for householders, there is an offense of pācittiya."
