[44] **"Whatever":** means whoever, of whatever sort … **"Bhikkhunī":** … this is the bhikkhunī intended in this sense.
**"Or should go alone to a village district":** for a village that is enclosed, when she steps her first foot beyond the enclosure of the village, there is an offense of grave transgression (thullaccaya); when she steps her second foot beyond, there is an offense entailing initial and subsequent meeting of the Saṅgha (saṅghādisesa). For a village that is unenclosed, when she steps her first foot beyond the vicinity (upacāra) of the village, there is an offense of grave transgression; when she steps her second foot beyond, there is an offense entailing initial and subsequent meeting of the Saṅgha.
**"Or should go alone to the far shore of a river":** "river" means wherever, as a bhikkhunī crosses over covering the three circles (timaṇḍala), her lower robe (antaravāsaka) gets wet. When she lifts her first foot across, there is an offense of grave transgression; when she lifts her second foot across, there is an offense entailing initial and subsequent meeting of the Saṅgha.
**"Or should stay apart alone for a night":** as she is departing, together with the rising of dawn, from within hand's reach (hatthapāsa) of a companion bhikkhunī, there is an offense of grave transgression; when it has been departed from, there is an offense entailing initial and subsequent meeting of the Saṅgha.
**"Or should fall behind alone from a group":** in a wilderness without villages, as she is departing from the range of sight or the range of hearing of a companion bhikkhunī, there is an offense of grave transgression; when it has been departed from, there is an offense entailing initial and subsequent meeting of the Saṅgha.
