[472] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time, bhikkhunīs (bhikkhunī) sat down on a seat in front of a bhikkhu without asking permission. The bhikkhus criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying: "How can bhikkhunīs sit down on a seat in front of a bhikkhu without asking permission?" …
"Is it true, bhikkhus, as is said, that bhikkhunīs sit down on a seat in front of a bhikkhu without asking permission?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How, bhikkhus, can bhikkhunīs sit down on a seat in front of a bhikkhu without asking permission? This, bhikkhus, is not conducive to the confidence of those without confidence …
"And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Should any bhikkhunī sit down on a seat in front of a bhikkhu without asking permission, there is an offense entailing expiation (pācittiya)."
