[155] **"Whatever [sufferings] of many kinds there are in the world" (yekeci lokasmiṃ anekarūpā):** "Whatever" (yekeci) — the all in its entirety, all in every way, without remainder, without exception; this word "whatever" is an expression of total inclusion. **"In the world" (lokasmiṃ):** in the world of the states of loss (apāyaloka), in the world of humans, in the world of devas, in the world of the aggregates (khandhaloka), in the world of the elements (dhātu) (dhātuloka), in the world of the sense bases (āyatana) (āyatanaloka). **"Of many kinds" (anekarūpā):** sufferings (dukkha) that are manifold, of various sorts. Thus: "whatever [sufferings] of many kinds there are in the world."
Therefore the Blessed One said:
"You have asked me indeed about the source of suffering, (Mettagū," said the Blessed One,)
"and I shall declare it to you as one who understands:
sufferings originate with acquisitions (upadhi) as their cause —
whatever [sufferings] of many kinds there are in the world."
