[207] **Should train in Nibbāna for oneself** (sikkhe nibbānamattano) — **should train** (sikkhe): there are three trainings (sikkhā): the training in higher virtue (adhisīlasikkhā), the training in higher mind (adhicittasikkhā), and the training in higher wisdom (adhipaññāsikkhā) … this is the training in higher wisdom.
**Nibbāna for oneself** (nibbānamattano): for the quenching of lust (rāga), for the quenching of hatred (dosa), for the quenching of delusion (moha), for the quenching of anger (kodha), for the quenching of grudging (upanāha) … for the stilling, the calming, the subsiding, the quenching, the relinquishing, and the tranquilizing of all unwholesome volitional formations (akusalābhisaṅkhārā), one should train in higher virtue, one should train in higher mind, one should train in higher wisdom. Adverting to these three trainings, one should train; knowing, one should train; seeing, one should train; reviewing, one should train; resolving the mind (citta), one should train; being resolved through faith (saddhā), one should train; exerting energy (vīriya), one should train; establishing mindfulness (sati), one should train; concentrating the mind, one should train; understanding with wisdom (paññā), one should train; directly knowing with direct knowledge (abhiññā), one should train; fully understanding with full understanding (pariññā), one should train; abandoning what is to be abandoned, one should train; developing what is to be developed, one should train; realizing what is to be realized, one should train; having undertaken it, one should conduct oneself; having undertaken it, one should proceed. Hence: "should train in Nibbāna for oneself." Therefore that brahmin said:
"I ask you, Blessed One; tell me this," (so said the venerable Dhotaka,)
"I long for your word, O Great Seer.
Having heard your utterance,
one would train in Nibbāna for oneself."
