Dhotakamāṇavakapañhāniddesa

Suttapiṭaka · Khuddakanikāya · Cūḷaniddesa · Vol. 30 · Section 212

[212] **"He should train for his own Nibbāna" — "he should train":** there are three trainings (sikkhā): the training in higher morality (adhisīlasikkhā), the training in higher mentality (adhicittasikkhā), and the training in higher wisdom (adhipaññāsikkhā) … this is the training in higher wisdom. **"For his own Nibbāna":** for the quenching (nibbāpana) of lust (rāga), for the quenching of hatred, for the quenching of delusion (dosa, moha), for the quenching of anger (kodha), for the quenching of grudge (upanāha) … for the stilling, the calming, the pacifying, the quenching, the relinquishing, and the tranquilizing of all unwholesome volitional formations (akusalābhisaṅkhāra), he should train in higher morality, he should train in higher mentality, and he should train in higher wisdom. Adverting to these three trainings, he should train; knowing them, he should train … realizing what is to be realized, he should train; having undertaken them, he should practice; having undertaken them, he should conduct himself accordingly — thus, "he should train for his own Nibbāna." Therefore the Blessed One said: "Therefore make ardent effort (said the Blessed One to Dhotaka), being prudent and mindful right here; having heard the utterance from here, he should train for his own Nibbāna."
