Suttapiṭaka · Khuddakanikāya · Cūḷaniddesa · Vol. 30 · Section 270

[270] **He goes out; he does not come within reckoning (atthaṃ paleti na upeti saṅkhaṃ).** **He goes out (atthaṃ paleti)**: he attains final Nibbāna by the Nibbāna element without residue remaining (anupādisesā nibbānadhātu); he has attained final Nibbāna [1] by the Nibbāna element without residue remaining. **He does not come within reckoning (na upeti saṅkhaṃ)**: [2] he does not come within reckoning (saṅkhā), does not come within designation (uddesa), does not come within enumeration (gaṇanā), does not come within description (paṇṇatti) as "a khattiya," or "a brahmin," or "a vessa," or "a sudda," or "a householder," or "one gone forth," or "a deva," or "a human being," or "one possessing form," or "formless," or "percipient," or "non-percipient," or "neither percipient nor non-percipient." For him there is no cause, there is no condition, there is no reason by which he might come within reckoning. Thus: he goes out; he does not come within reckoning. Therefore the Blessed One said: "As a flame tossed by the force of the wind (Upasīva," said the Blessed One,) "goes out and does not come within reckoning, so the sage, released from the name-body (nāmakāya), goes out and does not come within reckoning." [Edition footnotes, Siam Raṭṭha apparatus: 1. M(arammavāsī/Burmese ed.): *khittā … vakkhambhitā ti*; so also below. 2–3. In M these readings are absent. 4. M reads: "gone to the eastern quarter, or gone to the western quarter, or gone to the northern quarter, or gone to the southern quarter, or gone upward, or gone downward, or gone across, or gone to an intermediate quarter — for it there is no cause, there is no condition, there is no reason by which it might come within reckoning." 5. M: *tadaṅgaṃ samatikkamā*. 6. M: *suvimutto*. 7. M: *accanta-anupādāvimokkhenā ti*.]
