[374] **"Standing in the middle of the lake" (majjhe sarasmiṃ tiṭṭhataṃ):** "the lake (sara)" is a term for saṃsāra — the coming, the going, the going and coming, time (kāla), destination, existence upon existence (bhavābhava), passing away (cuti) and reappearance (upapatti), arising and dissolution, birth, aging, and death. Of saṃsāra no first extremity is discerned, and no last extremity is discerned … and in the middle of saṃsāra beings stand, are established, cling, have entered into, are attached, and are resolved upon it. How is it that the first extremity of saṃsāra is not discerned? … Thus too the first extremity of saṃsāra is not discerned. How is it that the last extremity of saṃsāra is not discerned? … Thus too the last extremity of saṃsāra is not discerned. Thus neither the first extremity of saṃsāra is discerned nor the last extremity discerned. In the very middle of saṃsāra beings stand, are established, cling, have entered into, are attached, and are resolved upon it — hence, "standing in the middle of the lake."
**"Kappa," (said) the Blessed One (kappāti bhagavā):** the Blessed One addresses that brahmin by name, "Kappa."
**"The Blessed One (Bhagavā)":** this is a term of reverence. … This designation, namely "Bhagavā," is a designation verified by realization (sacchikā paññatti) — hence, "'Kappa,' (said) the Blessed One."
