[432] **"This generation stuck in the realm of Death" (Pajaṃ imaṃ maccudheyye visattaṃ):** *pajā* ("generation") is a designation for beings.
**In the realm of Death (maccudheyye):** the defilements (kilesa), the aggregates (khandhā), and the volitional formations (abhisaṅkhārā) are called the realm of Death (maccudheyya). The generation is stuck, attached, caught, fastened, and entangled in the realm of Death, in the realm of Māra, in the realm of mortality. Just as goods [1] hung upon a wall-peg or upon an elephant-tusk peg are stuck, attached, caught, fastened, and entangled, even so the generation [2] is stuck, attached, caught, fastened, and entangled in the realm of Death, in the realm of Māra, in the realm of mortality. Therefore: "this generation stuck in the realm of Death." Hence the Blessed One said:
Therefore, knowing, a bhikkhu, being mindful,
should not cling to anything in all the world,
regarding [beings] as attached to grasping,
seeing this generation stuck in the realm of Death.
Together with the conclusion of the verse … "Venerable sir, the Blessed One is my teacher; I am his disciple."
