[449] **The breaking up of ignorance**: "Ignorance (avijjā)" means non-knowledge (aññāṇa) of suffering (dukkha) … ignorance the crossbar, delusion — the unwholesome root. "The breaking up of ignorance" means the breaking of ignorance, the breaking up, the abandoning, the calming, the relinquishing, the tranquilizing of it — the Deathless, Nibbāna. Hence "the breaking up of ignorance." Therefore the Blessed One said:
"Purified by equanimity (upekkhā) and mindfulness (sati),
preceded by reflection upon dhammas —
this I declare to be liberation through final knowledge (aññāvimokkha),
the breaking up of ignorance."
