[554] **"The Sage gladdened the brahmins" (tosesi brāhmaṇe munī):** "gladdened" — he gladdened, thoroughly gladdened, inspired confidence in, satisfied, and made them pleased in mind.
**"The brahmins"** — the sixteen brahmins of the Pārāyana (soḷasa pārāyaniye brāhmaṇe).
**"The Sage" (muni)** — sagacity (mona) is said to be knowledge (ñāṇa), that is, the wisdom, the act of understanding … having passed beyond attachment and the net, he is a sage — thus "the Sage gladdened the brahmins." Therefore this is said:
The Buddha, when asked, answered their question in accordance with truth;
by the answering of the questions the Sage gladdened the brahmins.
