[577] **"Of one who has abandoned stain and delusion" (pahīnamalamohassa):** "Stains" (mala): lust (rāga) is a stain, hatred is a stain, delusion is a stain, conceit (māna) is a stain, view (diṭṭhi) is a stain, defilement (kilesa) is a stain, all misconduct (duccarita) is a stain.
"Delusion" (moha): not-knowing (aññāṇa) with regard to suffering (dukkha) … the bolt of ignorance (avijjālaṅgī), delusion, the unwholesome root (akusalamūla) — this is called delusion.
Stain and delusion have been abandoned by the Buddha, the Blessed One, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, brought to non-existence, of a nature not to arise again in the future. Therefore the Buddha is "one who has abandoned stain and delusion" — hence "of one who has abandoned stain and delusion."
