[674] **Seeing this peril in intimacy (etaṃ bhayaṃ santhave pekkhamāno)**: "Peril" (bhaya) means: the peril of birth (jāti), the peril of aging (jarā), the peril of sickness, the peril of death (maraṇa), the peril of kings, the peril of thieves, the peril of fire, the peril of water, the peril of self-reproach, the peril of reproach by others, the peril of punishment, the peril of a bad destination, the peril of waves, the peril of crocodiles, the peril of whirlpools, the peril of sharks, the peril concerning livelihood, the peril of ill repute, the peril of timidity in assemblies; that which is frightening, trepidation, horripilation, agitation of mind, terror.
**In intimacy (santhave)**: there are two kinds of intimacy: intimacy through craving (taṇhā) and intimacy through views (diṭṭhi). … This is intimacy through craving. … This is intimacy through views.
**Seeing this peril in intimacy**: seeing, beholding, contemplating, and examining this peril in intimacy — therefore, "seeing this peril in intimacy." One should wander alone like the horn of a rhinoceros. Therefore that Paccekasambuddha said:
Sympathizing with friends and companions dear at heart,
one whose mind is bound neglects the good;
seeing this peril in intimacy,
one should wander alone like the horn of a rhinoceros.
