[690] **"And he is one of the four quarters, without repulsion (cātuddiso appaṭigho ca hoti)"** — **"One of the four quarters (cātuddiso)":** that Paccekabuddha (paccekasambuddha) dwells pervading one quarter with a mind imbued with loving-kindness (mettā); likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth. Thus above, below, across, everywhere, to all as to himself, he dwells pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with loving-kindness — abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without enmity, without ill will. With a mind imbued with compassion (karuṇā), with a mind imbued with altruistic joy (muditā), with a mind imbued with equanimity (upekkhā), he dwells pervading one quarter; likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth. Thus above, below, across, everywhere, to all as to himself, he dwells pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with equanimity — abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without enmity, without ill will. **"And he is one of the four quarters, without repulsion":** because loving-kindness has been developed by him, the beings in the eastern quarter are not repulsive to him; the beings in the western quarter are not repulsive to him; the beings in the southern quarter are not repulsive to him; the beings in the northern quarter are not repulsive to him; the beings in the eastern intermediate quarter are not repulsive to him; the beings in the western intermediate quarter are not repulsive to him; the beings in the southern intermediate quarter are not repulsive to him; the beings in the northern intermediate quarter are not repulsive to him; the beings in the quarter below are not repulsive to him; the beings in the quarter above are not repulsive to him; the beings in the quarters and intermediate quarters are not repulsive to him. Because compassion has been developed, because altruistic joy has been developed, because equanimity has been developed, the beings in the eastern quarter are not repulsive to him … the beings in the quarters and intermediate quarters are not repulsive to him. Therefore, "he is one of the four quarters, without repulsion."
