[753] **"One should associate with one of great learning, a bearer of the Dhamma" (bahussutaṃ dhammadharaṃ bhajetha):** "Of great learning" (bahussuta) means: one who has learned much, a bearer of what has been heard, one who has stored up what has been heard. Those teachings that are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, with meaning and with phrasing, which proclaim the utterly complete and pure holy life (brahmacariya) — such teachings have been much learned by him, retained (dhatā), verbally mastered, examined with the mind, and thoroughly penetrated by view (diṭṭhiyā supaṭividdhā).
**"A bearer of the Dhamma" (dhammadharaṃ):** one bearing the Dhamma — the discourses (sutta), the discourses mixed with verses (geyya), the prose-expositions (veyyākaraṇa), the verses (gāthā), the inspired utterances (udāna), the thus-said discourses (itivuttaka), the birth-stories (jātaka), the marvelous accounts (abbhūtadhamma), and the question-and-answer texts (vedalla).
**"One should associate with one of great learning, a bearer of the Dhamma":** one should associate with, frequent, resort to, keep company with, and cultivate a friend who is of great learning and a bearer of the Dhamma; hence, "one should associate with one of great learning, a bearer of the Dhamma."
