[774] **"With guarded faculties (guttindriyo)"**: that Paccekasambuddha, having seen a form (rūpa) with the eye, is not one who grasps at the sign (nimitta), not one who grasps at the secondary features (anubyañjana). Since, if he were to dwell with the eye-faculty (cakkhundriya) unrestrained, evil, unwholesome states of covetousness and grief (abhijjhā-domanassa) might flow in upon him, he practices for its restraint; he guards the eye-faculty; he undertakes restraint with regard to the eye-faculty. Having heard a sound with the ear, having smelt an odor with the nose, having tasted a flavor with the tongue, having touched a tangible object with the body, having cognized a dhamma with the mind, he is not one who grasps at the sign, not one who grasps at the secondary features. Since, if he were to dwell with the mind-faculty (manindriya) unrestrained, evil, unwholesome states of covetousness and grief might flow in upon him, he practices for its restraint; he guards the mind-faculty; he undertakes restraint with regard to the mind-faculty. Thus, "with guarded faculties." **"With protected mind (rakkhitamānasāno)"**: one whose mind is guarded, whose mind (citta) is protected. Thus, "with guarded faculties, with protected mind." [Editorial footnotes of the Siam Raṭṭha edition: ¹ The Burmese edition does not have these readings. ² Burmese: *palapati*. ³ Burmese: *suññāgāraṃ*. ⁴ Burmese reads the lemma as one phrase: *guttindriyo rakkhitamānasāno*.]
