[789] **"Having put behind him pleasure and pain, and, even before, joy and grief"** — that Paccekasambuddha, with the abandoning of pleasure (sukha) and the abandoning of pain (dukkha), and with the previous passing away of joy (somanassa) and grief (domanassa), enters and dwells in the fourth jhāna, which is neither painful nor pleasant and possesses purity of mindfulness (sati) born of equanimity (upekkhā). Therefore [it is said]: "having put behind him pleasure and pain, and, even before, joy and grief."
