[96] **One should be unclouded in mind (manasā anāvilo siyā)** — "mind" (mano): that which is mind (citta), intellect (mano), mentality (mānasa), heart (hadaya), the pure (paṇḍara), the mind base (manāyatana), the mind faculty (manindriya), consciousness (viññāṇa), the aggregate of consciousness (viññāṇakkhandha), the mind-consciousness element (manoviññāṇadhātu).
Through misconduct by body the mind becomes clouded, churned up, stirred, agitated, shaken, whirling, unstilled; through misconduct by speech, through misconduct by mind, through lust (rāga), through hatred (dosa), through delusion (moha), through anger (kodha), through grudging (upanāha), through detraction (makkha), through domineering rivalry (paḷāsa), through envy (issā), through avarice (macchariya), through deceit (māyā), through hypocrisy (sāṭheyya), through obstinacy (thambha), through contentiousness (sārambha), through conceit (māna), through excessive conceit (atimāna), through intoxication (mada), through heedlessness (pamāda) — through all defilements (kilesa), all misconduct, all distress (daratha), all fevers (pariḷāha), all torments (santāpa), all unwholesome volitional formations (akusalābhisaṅkhāra), the mind becomes clouded, churned up, stirred, agitated, shaken, whirling, unstilled.
**One should be unclouded in mind**: one should be unclouded in mind — unchurned, unstirred, unagitated, unshaken, not whirling, stilled. One should abandon, relinquish, dispel, make an end of, and bring to non-existence the defilements that make for cloudiness; and, refraining, abstaining, desisting from the defilements that make for cloudiness — gone out from them, released from them, stilled, freed, and detached from them — one should dwell with a mind made free of boundaries (vimariyādikatena cetasā). Therefore it is said: **one should be unclouded in mind.**
