[222] "And with the calming of the three formations (saṅkhārā)": with the calming of which three formations? For one who has attained the second jhāna, thought and examination (vitakka-vicārā), the verbal formations (vacīsaṅkhārā), are calmed; for one who has attained the fourth jhāna, in-breathing and out-breathing, the bodily formations (kāyasaṅkhārā), are calmed; for one who has attained the cessation of perception and feeling (saññāvedayitanirodha), perception and feeling (vedanā), the mental formations (cittasaṅkhārā), are calmed — with the calming of these three formations.
