[320] How does one regard self in feeling (vedanā)?
Here someone regards perception, volitional formations, consciousness, and form as self. It occurs to him thus: "This indeed is my self; but this self of mine is in this feeling" — thus he regards self in feeling. Just as … ["…" — elided in the Pali] … one regards a gem in a casket, even so, here someone regards perception, volitional formations, consciousness, and form as self. It occurs to him thus: "This indeed is my self; but this self of mine is in this feeling" — thus he regards self in feeling. The misapprehension through adherence (abhinivesa-parāmāsa) is a view. The view is not the basis; the basis is not the view; the view is one thing, the basis another. The view together with the basis — this is the fourth view of self (attānudiṭṭhi) with feeling as its basis. The view of self is wrong view, a failure of view … ["…" — elided in the Pali] … These are fetters, but not views. Thus one regards self in feeling.
