Suttapiṭaka · Khuddakanikāya · Paṭisambhidāmagga · Vol. 31 · Section 385

[385] What is exertion (padhāna)? For one of aroused energy (vīriya), both the body and the mind (citta) become workable — this is exertion. What is application (payoga)? For one of aroused energy, the mental defilements (upakkilesa) are abandoned and thoughts (vitakka) are stilled — this is application. What is distinction (visesa)? For one of aroused energy, the fetters (saññojana) are abandoned and the latent tendencies (anusaya) come to destruction — this is distinction. Thus these three dhammas are not the objects of a single mind-moment, and yet these three dhammas are not unknown; the mind does not fall into distraction; exertion is evident, one accomplishes the application, and one attains distinction.
