[387] What are the thirty-two knowledges (ñāṇa) in the acts of one who practices mindfulness (satokārī)?
Here a bhikkhu, gone to the forest, or gone to the root of a tree, or gone to an empty dwelling, sits down; having folded his legs crosswise, set his body erect, and established mindfulness before him, he, just mindful, breathes out … He trains thus: 'Experiencing the whole body, I shall breathe out'; he trains thus: 'Experiencing the whole body, I shall breathe in.' He trains thus: 'Calming the bodily formation (kāyasaṅkhāra), I shall breathe out'; he trains thus: 'Calming the bodily formation, I shall breathe in.' Experiencing rapture (pīti); experiencing pleasure; experiencing the mental formation (cittasaṅkhāra); calming the mental formation; experiencing the mind (citta); gladdening the mind; concentrating the mind; liberating the mind; contemplating impermanence; contemplating dispassion (virāga); contemplating cessation (nirodha); he trains thus: 'Contemplating relinquishment (paṭinissagga), I shall breathe out'; he trains thus: 'Contemplating relinquishment, I shall breathe in.'
