[389] "Mindful, he breathes in (sato va assasati)": one acts with mindfulness (sato-kārī) in thirty-two ways. For one who knows the one-pointedness (ekaggatā) and non-distraction of the mind (citta) by way of the long in-breath, mindfulness (sati) is established; by that mindfulness and that knowledge (ñāṇa) one acts with mindfulness. For one who knows the one-pointedness and non-distraction of the mind by way of the long out-breath, mindfulness is established; by that mindfulness and that knowledge one acts with mindfulness. For one who knows the one-pointedness and non-distraction of the mind by way of the short in-breath, mindfulness is established; by that mindfulness and that knowledge one acts with mindfulness. For one who knows the one-pointedness and non-distraction of the mind by way of the short out-breath, mindfulness is established; by that mindfulness and that knowledge one acts with mindfulness. … For one who knows the one-pointedness and non-distraction of the mind by way of contemplating relinquishment (paṭinissaggānupassī) with the in-breath, and contemplating relinquishment with the out-breath, mindfulness is established; by that mindfulness and that knowledge one acts with mindfulness.
