[454] How should the faculties (indriya) be seen in the sense of predominance (adhimatta)?
Zeal (chanda) arises for the development (bhāvanā) of the faith faculty (saddhindriya); zeal arises for the abandoning of faithlessness; zeal arises for the abandoning of the fever of faithlessness; zeal arises for the abandoning of the defilements (kilesa) that stand together with views; zeal arises for the abandoning of the gross defilements; zeal arises for the abandoning of the subtle defilements; zeal arises for the abandoning of all defilements.
By way of zeal, by way of faith, the faith faculty becomes predominant. By way of zeal, gladness (pāmujja) arises; by way of gladness, by way of faith, the faith faculty becomes predominant. By way of gladness, rapture (pīti) arises; by way of rapture, by way of faith, the faith faculty becomes predominant. By way of rapture, tranquility (passaddhi) arises; by way of tranquility, by way of faith, the faith faculty becomes predominant. By way of tranquility, happiness arises; by way of happiness, by way of faith, the faith faculty becomes predominant. By way of happiness, illumination (obhāsa) arises; by way of illumination, by way of faith, the faith faculty becomes predominant. By way of illumination, a sense of urgency (saṃvega) arises; by way of the sense of urgency, by way of faith, the faith faculty becomes predominant. Having stirred the mind (citta) with urgency, one concentrates it; by way of concentration (samādhi), by way of faith, the faith faculty becomes predominant. One thoroughly exerts the mind thus concentrated; by way of exertion (paggaha), by way of faith, the faith faculty becomes predominant. One thoroughly looks on with equanimity at the mind thus exerted; by way of equanimity (upekkhā), by way of faith, the faith faculty becomes predominant. By way of equanimity, the mind is liberated from the manifold defilements; by way of liberation (vimokkha), by way of faith, the faith faculty becomes predominant. Because they are liberated, those dhammas come to have a single function (ekarasa); by way of development in the sense of single function, by way of faith, the faith faculty becomes predominant. Because they are developed, they turn away from that toward what is more sublime; by way of turning away (vivaṭṭanā), by way of faith, the faith faculty becomes predominant. Because of having turned away, one relinquishes from that; by way of relinquishment (vossagga), by way of faith, the faith faculty becomes predominant. Because of having been relinquished, they cease from that; by way of cessation (nirodha), by way of faith, the faith faculty becomes predominant.
By way of cessation there are two relinquishments: relinquishment as giving up (pariccāga-vossagga) and relinquishment as launching forth (pakkhandana-vossagga). It gives up the defilements and the aggregates (khandha): thus it is relinquishment as giving up. The mind launches forth into the Nibbāna-element that is cessation: thus it is relinquishment as launching forth. By way of cessation, these are the two relinquishments.
