[472] Which are the four liberations (vimokkha) that conform to emergences internally (ajjhattavuṭṭhāna)? Thought-conception (vitakka), discursive thought (vicāra), rapture (pīti), happiness (sukha), and one-pointedness of mind (cittekaggatā) for the sake of obtaining the first jhāna; for the sake of obtaining the second jhāna; for the sake of obtaining the third jhāna; for the sake of obtaining the fourth jhāna — thought-conception, discursive thought, rapture, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind: these are the four liberations that conform to emergences internally.

Thought-conception, discursive thought, rapture, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind for the sake of obtaining the attainment (samāpatti) of the sphere of the infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana); for the sake of obtaining the attainment of the sphere of the infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana), the attainment of the sphere of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana), the attainment of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana) — thought-conception, discursive thought, rapture, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind: these are the four liberations that conform to emergences externally.

Contemplation of impermanence (aniccānupassanā), contemplation of suffering (dukkhānupassanā, dukkha), and contemplation of non-self (anattānupassanā) for the sake of obtaining the path (magga) of stream-entry (sotāpattimagga); for the sake of obtaining the path of once-returning (sakadāgāmimagga); for the sake of obtaining the path of non-returning (anāgāmimagga); for the sake of obtaining the path of Arahantship (arahattamagga) — contemplation of impermanence, contemplation of suffering, and contemplation of non-self: these are the four liberations that conform to emergences in both ways.
