[476] How is it a liberation (vimokkha) in that one is resolved upon only the beautiful (subha)?
Here a bhikkhu dwells pervading one direction with a mind (citta) imbued with loving-kindness (mettā), likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth; so too above, below, across, everywhere, to all as to himself, he dwells pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with loving-kindness — abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without enmity, without ill will. Because loving-kindness has been developed, beings are unrepulsive. With a mind imbued with compassion (karuṇā), one direction … Because compassion has been developed, beings are unrepulsive. With a mind imbued with altruistic joy (muditā) … Because altruistic joy has been developed, beings are unrepulsive. He dwells pervading one direction with a mind imbued with equanimity (upekkhā) … Because equanimity has been developed, beings are unrepulsive. Thus it is a liberation in that one is resolved upon only the beautiful.
