[480] What is liberation through perception (saññāvimokkha)? One liberation through perception may become ten liberations through perception; ten liberations through perception become one liberation through perception, by way of basis (vatthu), by a particular method (pariyāya). "May become": and how may it become so? The knowledge (ñāṇa) of the contemplation of impermanence (aniccānupassanā) is released from the perception (of things) as permanent; thus it is a liberation through perception. The knowledge of the contemplation of suffering (dukkha) is released from the perception (of things) as pleasant; thus it is a liberation through perception. The knowledge of the contemplation of non-self (anattānupassanā) is released from the perception (of things) as self; thus it is a liberation through perception. The knowledge of the contemplation of disenchantment (nibbidānupassanā) is released from the perception of delight (nandi); thus it is a liberation through perception. The knowledge of the contemplation of dispassion (virāgānupassanā) is released from the perception of lust; thus it is a liberation through perception. The knowledge of the contemplation of cessation (nirodhānupassanā) is released from the perception of origin; thus it is a liberation through perception. The knowledge of the contemplation of relinquishment (paṭinissaggānupassanā) is released from the perception of grasping (ādāna); thus it is a liberation through perception. The knowledge of the contemplation of the signless (animittānupassanā) is released from the perception of signs (nimitta); thus it is a liberation through perception. The knowledge of the contemplation of the desireless (appaṇihitānupassanā) is released from the perception of desire (paṇidhi); thus it is a liberation through perception. The knowledge of the contemplation of emptiness (suññatānupassanā) is released from the perception of adherence (abhinivesa); thus it is a liberation through perception. Thus one liberation through perception may become ten liberations through perception; ten liberations through perception become one liberation through perception, by way of basis, by a particular method. The knowledge of the contemplation of impermanence in form (rūpa) is released from the perception (of it) as permanent; thus it is a liberation through perception … The knowledge of the contemplation of emptiness in form is released from the perception of adherence; thus it is a liberation through perception. Thus one liberation through perception may become ten liberations through perception; ten liberations through perception become one liberation through perception, by way of basis, by a particular method. In feeling (vedanā) … in perception, in volitional formations, in consciousness, in the eye … in aging and death, the knowledge of the contemplation of impermanence is released from the perception (of it) as permanent; thus it is a liberation through perception … The knowledge of the contemplation of emptiness in aging and death is released from the perception of adherence; thus it is a liberation through perception. Thus one liberation through perception may become ten liberations through perception; ten liberations through perception become one liberation through perception, by way of basis, by a particular method. This is liberation through perception.
