[487] These three gateways to liberation (vimokkhamukha) lead to emergence from the world: through contemplating all formations (saṅkhāra) as limited and circumscribed, and through the mind's (citta) entering into the signless element (animittā dhātu); through the stirring of the mind with regard to all formations, and through the mind's entering into the desireless element (appaṇihitā dhātu); through contemplating all dhammas as other, and through the mind's entering into the emptiness element (suññatā dhātu). These three gateways to liberation lead to emergence from the world.
