[530] Bhikkhus, this holy life (brahmacariya) is one whose cream is to be drunk (maṇḍapeyya) while the Teacher is present in person. While the Teacher is present in person, the cream (maṇḍa) is threefold: the cream of the teaching (desanāmaṇḍa), the cream of the receiving (paṭiggahamaṇḍa), and the cream of the holy life (brahmacariyamaṇḍa).
What is the cream of the teaching? The announcing, teaching, making known, establishing, disclosing, analyzing, and elucidating of the four noble truths (ariyasacca); the announcing, teaching, … of the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) … of the four right exertions (sammappadhāna), of the four bases for success (iddhipāda), of the five faculties (indriya), of the five powers (bala), of the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga), of the Noble Eightfold Path — the announcing, teaching, making known, establishing, disclosing, analyzing, and elucidating: this is the cream of the teaching.
What is the cream of the receiving? Bhikkhus, bhikkhunīs, male lay followers, female lay followers, devas, humans, or whatever others there may be who understand: this is the cream of the receiving.
What is the cream of the holy life? It is just this Noble Eightfold Path, namely: Right View, Right Thought, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, Right Concentration: this is the cream of the holy life.
