[532] There is the cream (maṇḍa), there is what is fit to drink (peyya), there is the dregs (kasaṭa). The faith faculty (saddhindriya) is the cream of resolution (adhimokkha); faithlessness is the dregs; the taste of meaning, the taste of the Dhamma, the taste of liberation (vimuttirasa) therein — this is what is fit to drink. The energy faculty (vīriyindriya) is the cream of exertion (paggaha); laziness is the dregs; the taste of meaning, the taste of the Dhamma, the taste of liberation therein — this is what is fit to drink. The mindfulness faculty (satindriya) is the cream of establishment (upaṭṭhāna); heedlessness is the dregs; the taste of meaning, the taste of the Dhamma, the taste of liberation therein — this is what is fit to drink. The concentration (samādhi) faculty is the cream of non-distraction (avikkhepa); restlessness is the dregs; the taste of meaning, the taste of the Dhamma, the taste of liberation therein — this is what is fit to drink. The wisdom faculty (paññindriya) is the cream of seeing (dassana); ignorance (avijjā) is the dregs; the taste of meaning, the taste of the Dhamma, the taste of liberation therein — this is what is fit to drink. The power of faith (saddhābala) is the cream of unshakability in the face of faithlessness; faithlessness is the dregs; the taste of meaning, the taste of the Dhamma, the taste of liberation therein — this is what is fit to drink. The power of energy is the cream of unshakability in the face of laziness; laziness is the dregs; the taste of meaning, the taste of the Dhamma, the taste of liberation therein — this is what is fit to drink. The power of mindfulness is the cream of unshakability in the face of heedlessness; heedlessness is the dregs; the taste of meaning, the taste of the Dhamma, the taste of liberation therein — this is what is fit to drink. The power of concentration is the cream of unshakability in the face of restlessness; restlessness is the dregs; the taste of meaning, the taste of the Dhamma, the taste of liberation therein — this is what is fit to drink. The power of wisdom is the cream of unshakability in the face of ignorance; ignorance is the dregs; the taste of meaning, the taste of the Dhamma, the taste of liberation therein — this is what is fit to drink. The mindfulness factor of awakening (bojjhaṅga) is the cream of establishment; heedlessness is the dregs; the taste of meaning, the taste of the Dhamma, the taste of liberation therein — this is what is fit to drink. The investigation-of-dhammas (dhammavicaya) factor of awakening is the cream of examination (pavicaya); ignorance is the dregs; the taste of meaning, the taste of the Dhamma, the taste of liberation therein — this is what is fit to drink. The energy factor of awakening is the cream of exertion; laziness is the dregs; the taste of meaning, the taste of the Dhamma, the taste of liberation therein — this is what is fit to drink. The rapture (pīti) factor of awakening is the cream of pervasion (pharaṇa); fever (pariḷāha) is the dregs; the taste of meaning, the taste of the Dhamma, the taste of liberation therein — this is what is fit to drink. The tranquility (passaddhi) factor of awakening is the cream of calm (upasama); grossness (duṭṭhulla) is the dregs; the taste of meaning, the taste of the Dhamma, the taste of liberation therein — this is what is fit to drink. The concentration factor of awakening is the cream of non-distraction; restlessness is the dregs; the taste of meaning, the taste of the Dhamma, the taste of liberation therein — this is what is fit to drink. The equanimity (upekkhā) factor of awakening is the cream of reflection (paṭisaṅkhāna); non-reflection is the dregs; the taste of meaning, the taste of the Dhamma, the taste of liberation therein — this is what is fit to drink.
