[534] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Venerable Ānanda was dwelling at Kosambī, in Ghosita's Park. There the Venerable Ānanda addressed the bhikkhus: "Friends!" "Friend," those bhikkhus replied to the Venerable Ānanda. The Venerable Ānanda said this: "Friends, whatever bhikkhu or bhikkhunī declares arahantship (arahatta) in my presence has done so by all four paths or by a certain one of them. By which four?
"Here, friends, a bhikkhu develops insight (vipassanā) preceded by serenity (samatha). As he is developing insight preceded by serenity, the path is born. He pursues that path, develops it, and cultivates it. As he is pursuing, developing, and cultivating that path, the fetters are abandoned and the latent tendencies (anusaya) are brought to an end.
"Again, friends, a bhikkhu develops serenity preceded by insight. As he is developing serenity preceded by insight, the path is born. He pursues that path, develops it, and cultivates it. As he is pursuing, developing, and cultivating that path, the fetters are abandoned and the latent tendencies are brought to an end.
"Again, friends, a bhikkhu develops serenity and insight yoked together in tandem (yuganaddha). As he is developing serenity and insight yoked together in tandem, the path is born. He pursues that path, develops it, and cultivates it. As he is pursuing, developing, and cultivating that path, the fetters are abandoned and the latent tendencies are brought to an end.
"Again, friends, a bhikkhu's mind is seized by restlessness regarding dhammas. There comes a time, friends, when that mind (citta) becomes internally steadied, settles down, becomes unified, and is concentrated. The path is born in him. He pursues that path, develops it, and cultivates it. As he is pursuing, developing, and cultivating that path, the fetters are abandoned and the latent tendencies are brought to an end.
"Friends, whatever bhikkhu or bhikkhunī declares arahantship in my presence has done so by all these four paths or by a certain one of them."
