[582] Of all beings in the eastern direction, of all beings in the western direction, of all beings in the northern direction, of all beings in the southern direction, of all beings in the eastern intermediate direction, of all beings in the western intermediate direction, of all beings in the northern intermediate direction, of all beings in the southern intermediate direction, of all beings in the direction below, of all beings in the direction above — avoiding oppression, with non-oppression; avoiding injury, with non-injury; avoiding torment, with non-torment; avoiding exhaustion, with non-exhaustion; avoiding harassment, with non-harassment — [thus:] "May all beings in the direction above be free from enmity, may they not be hostile; may they be happy, may they not suffer (dukkha); may they be happy in themselves, may they not be miserable in themselves." In these eight modes one extends loving-kindness (mettā) to all beings in the direction above: hence "loving-kindness." One intends that dhamma: hence "mind (ceto)." It is released from all obsessions of ill will (byāpāda): hence "deliverance (vimutti)." It is both loving-kindness and deliverance of mind: hence "the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness (mettācetovimutti)."
"May all beings in the direction above be free from enmity, may they be secure, may they be happy" — thus one resolves with faith, and the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness comes to be developed by the faith faculty (saddhindriya) … they produce it, make it shine, make it blaze.
