[60] For one striving to obtain the first jhāna (paṭhamajjhāna), the first jhāna is obtained: thus that dhamma is both fully understood (pariññāta) and scrutinized (tīrita). The second jhāna … the third jhāna … For one striving to obtain the fourth jhāna, the fourth jhāna is obtained: thus that dhamma is both fully understood and scrutinized. For one striving to obtain the attainment (samāpatti) of the sphere of infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana), the attainment of the sphere of infinity of space is obtained: thus that dhamma is both fully understood and scrutinized. For one striving to obtain the attainment of the sphere of infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana), the attainment of the sphere of infinity of consciousness is obtained: thus that dhamma is both fully understood and scrutinized. For one striving to obtain the attainment of the sphere of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana), the attainment of the sphere of nothingness is obtained: thus that dhamma is both fully understood and scrutinized. For one striving to obtain the attainment of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana), the attainment of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception is obtained: thus that dhamma is both fully understood and scrutinized.
