[677] What is penetrative wisdom (nibbedhikapaññā), in the phrase "they conduce to the state of penetrative wisdom"?
Here a certain person is full of alarm regarding all formations (saṅkhārā), full of terror, full of dissatisfaction, full of discontent, full of non-delight; turned away, he finds no delight in all formations. He penetrates and shatters the mass of greed (lobha), never penetrated before, never shattered before — thus it is penetrative wisdom. He penetrates and shatters the mass of hatred (dosa), never penetrated before, never shattered before — thus it is penetrative wisdom. He penetrates and shatters the mass of delusion (moha), never penetrated before, never shattered before — thus it is penetrative wisdom. He penetrates and shatters anger (kodha), never penetrated before, never shattered before … resentment (upanāha), denigration (makkha), domineering (paḷāsa), envy (issā), avarice (macchariya), deceit (māyā), fraud (sāṭheyya), obstinacy (thambha), contentiousness (sārambha), conceit (māna), arrogance (atimāna), vanity (mada), heedlessness (pamāda), all defilements (kilesa), all misconduct (duccarita), all volitional formations (abhisaṅkhāra) … all kamma leading to existence (bhavagāmikamma) — thus it is penetrative wisdom. This is the penetrative wisdom in "they conduce to the state of penetrative wisdom." These are the sixteen kinds of wisdom (paññā).
