[735] By how many aspects does one obtain conformable acceptance (anulomikā khanti)? By how many aspects does one enter upon the certainty of rightness (sammattaniyāma)? By forty aspects one obtains conformable acceptance; by forty aspects one enters upon the certainty of rightness.

[One sees] the five aggregates (khandha) as impermanent, as suffering (dukkha), as a disease, as a boil, as a dart, as misery, as an affliction, as alien, as disintegrating, as a calamity, as a disaster, as a peril, as a menace, as wavering, as perishable, as unenduring, as without protection, as without shelter, as without refuge, as empty, as hollow, as void, as not-self (anattā), as danger, as subject to change, as without core, as the root of misery, as a murderer, as subject to annihilation, as subject to taints (āsava), as conditioned, as Māra's bait, as subject to birth, as subject to aging, as subject to illness, as subject to death, as subject to sorrow, as subject to lamentation, as subject to despair, as subject to defilement.
Seeing the five aggregates as impermanent, one obtains conformable acceptance; seeing that "the cessation of the five aggregates is Nibbāna, which is permanent," one enters upon the certainty of rightness. Seeing the five aggregates as suffering, one obtains conformable acceptance; seeing that "the cessation of the five aggregates is Nibbāna, which is blissful," one enters upon the certainty of rightness. Seeing the five aggregates as a disease, one obtains conformable acceptance; seeing that "the cessation of the five aggregates is Nibbāna, which is health," one enters upon the certainty of rightness. Seeing the five aggregates as a boil, one obtains conformable acceptance; seeing that "the cessation of the five aggregates is Nibbāna, which is free of boils," one enters upon the certainty of rightness. Seeing the five aggregates as a dart, one obtains conformable acceptance; seeing that "the cessation of the five aggregates is Nibbāna, which is free of darts," one enters upon the certainty of rightness. Seeing the five aggregates as misery, one obtains conformable acceptance; seeing that "the cessation of the five aggregates is Nibbāna, which is free of misery," one enters upon the certainty of rightness. Seeing the five aggregates as an affliction, one obtains conformable acceptance; seeing that "the cessation of the five aggregates is Nibbāna, which is free of affliction," one enters upon the certainty of rightness. Seeing the five aggregates as alien, one obtains conformable acceptance; seeing that "the cessation of the five aggregates is Nibbāna, which is not dependent on another," one enters upon the certainty of rightness. Seeing the five aggregates as disintegrating, one obtains conformable acceptance; seeing that "the cessation of the five aggregates is Nibbāna, which is not subject to disintegration," one enters upon the certainty of rightness. Seeing the five aggregates as a calamity, one obtains conformable acceptance; seeing that "the cessation of the five aggregates is Nibbāna, which is free of calamity," one enters upon the certainty of rightness. Seeing the five aggregates as a disaster, one obtains conformable acceptance; seeing that "the cessation of the five aggregates is Nibbāna, which is free of disaster," one enters upon the certainty of rightness. Seeing the five aggregates as a peril, one obtains conformable acceptance; seeing that "the cessation of the five aggregates is Nibbāna, which is free of peril," one enters upon the certainty of rightness. Seeing the five aggregates as a menace, one obtains conformable acceptance; seeing that "the cessation of the five aggregates is Nibbāna, which is free of menace," one enters upon the certainty of rightness. Seeing the five aggregates as wavering, one obtains conformable acceptance; seeing that "the cessation of the five aggregates is Nibbāna, which is unwavering," one enters upon the certainty of rightness. Seeing the five aggregates as perishable, one obtains conformable acceptance; seeing that "the cessation of the five aggregates is Nibbāna, which is imperishable," one enters upon the certainty of rightness.
