[81] Therein, what is sorrow (soka)? For one touched by loss (byasana) of relatives, or touched by loss of wealth, or touched by loss through illness, or touched by loss of virtue, or touched by loss with regard to view (diṭṭhi) — for one beset by one or another loss, touched by one or another painful state (dukkhadhamma) — the sorrow, the sorrowing, the state of being sorrowful, inward sorrow, inward deep sorrow, the burning of the mind, grief (domanassa), the dart of sorrow: this is called sorrow.
Therein, what is lamentation (parideva)? For one touched by loss of relatives, or touched by loss of wealth, or touched by loss through illness, or touched by loss of virtue, or touched by loss with regard to view — for one beset by one or another loss, touched by one or another painful state — the wailing, the lamenting, the act of wailing, the act of lamenting, the state of wailing, the state of lamentation, verbal talk, prattle, babbling, the act of babbling, the state of babbling: this is called lamentation.
Therein, what is pain (dukkha)? Whatever bodily discomfort, bodily pain, uncomfortable painful experience born of body-contact, uncomfortable painful feeling (vedanā) born of body-contact: this is called pain.
Therein, what is grief (domanassa)? Whatever mental discomfort, mental pain, uncomfortable painful experience born of mind-contact, uncomfortable painful feeling born of mind-contact: this is called grief.
Therein, what is despair (upāyāsa)? For one touched by loss of relatives, or touched by loss of wealth, or touched by loss through illness, or touched by loss of virtue, or touched by loss with regard to view — for one beset by one or another loss, touched by one or another painful state — the distress, the despair, the state of being distressed, the state of despair: this is called despair.
