[4] The Blessed One Anomadassī, Eldest of the World, Bull among Men,
dwelt in the Himavant, attended by a host of devas.
At that time I was a nāga king, Varuṇa by name;
taking any form at will, I worked transformations, having my dwelling in the great ocean.
Setting aside my own attendant host, I arranged instrumental music;
surrounding the Perfectly Awakened One, the celestial nymphs (accharā) then played.
And while those instruments were sounding, the instruments of the devas played;
hearing the sound of both, the Buddha too awoke.
Having invited the Perfectly Awakened One, I returned to my own abode;
having spread out a seat, I announced the time.
Surrounded by a thousand whose taints (āsava) were destroyed, the Leader of the World,
illuminating all the directions, came to my abode.
The Great Hero who had entered and taken his seat, the Deva above devas, the Bull among Men —
him, together with the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, I then satisfied with food and drink.
The Great Hero, the Self-Arisen One (sayambhū), the Supreme Person, expressed his appreciation;
sitting amid the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, he spoke these verses:
"He who has honored the Saṅgha, and the Buddha, the Leader of the World —
by that confidence of mind he will go to the deva world.
Seventy-seven times he will exercise rulership among the devas,
and one hundred and eight times kingship over the earth: he will dwell ruling the land.
And fifty-five times he will be a wheel-turning monarch (cakkavatti);
riches beyond reckoning will arise for him at that very time.
In an eon immeasurable from now, one arisen in the family of Okkāka,
Gotama by clan, will be the Teacher in the world.
Passing away from hell (niraya), he will come to the human state;
he will be a kinsman of Brahmā, Kolita by name.
Afterwards, having gone forth, urged on by wholesome roots (kusalamūla),
he will be the second disciple of the Blessed One Gotama.
With energy (vīriya) aroused, resolute, gone to perfection in psychic power (iddhi),
having fully understood all the taints, he will attain Nibbāna, free from taints."
Relying upon an evil friend, gone under the sway of sensual lust (kāmarāga),
with corrupted mind I slew my mother and my father too.
Into whatever womb I was reborn, whether hell or the human state,
being possessed of that evil kamma, I died with my head broken open.
This is my last; my final existence is now proceeding;
here too, such a thing will befall me at the time of death.
Devoted to seclusion, delighting in the development of concentration (samādhi),
having fully understood all the taints, I dwell free from taints.
Even the earth, so deep, so thick, so hard to assail,
I could set shaking with my left thumb — I who have gone to perfection in psychic power.
I see no conceit "I am" (asmimāna); conceit is not found in me;
beginning even with the novices, I keep a mind of reverence.
In the eon immeasurable from now, the deed that I performed with aspiration —
of that I have reached the very plane: I have attained the destruction of the taints.
The four analytical knowledges (paṭisambhidā), and these eight liberations (vimokkha),
the six superknowledges (chaḷabhiññā) have been realized; the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.
Thus indeed did the Venerable Elder Mahāmoggallāna speak these verses.
The Apadāna of the Elder Mahāmoggallāna is concluded.
