[171] "All existences are utterly exhausted; the juncture of existence[1] has been loosed; and no taints (āsava) of ours remain — we declare it, O Great Sage. Whatever wholesome preparatory service (parikamma)[2] was well[3] aspired to, and the articles of use[4] given by me — they were for your sake, O Great Sage. The articles of use given by me, with aspiration, to Buddhas, to Paccekabuddhas, and to disciples — they were for your sake, O Great Sage. Work both high and low for the bhikkhus was well aspired to by me; the preparatory work for (rebirth in) a high family has been done by us,[5] O Great Sage. Spurred on by that very bright root, through the excellence of that kamma, transcending the (merely) human, we were born in a khattiya family. The kamma having been accumulated[6] and done together, and also[7] together in birth, in the final (existence) we were born together, khattiya women sprung from (noble) families. Possessed of beauty, possessed of wealth, honored with gain and homage, (we dwelt) in the inner palace, O Great Hero, as in the Nandana of the devas. Grown disenchanted, we went forth from the house into homelessness; within but a few days we all attained quenching (nibbuti). Robes, almsfood, requisites, and lodging — many people present these to us; we are ever honored and revered. Our defilements (kilesa) have been burnt away; all existences have been extirpated; like a she-elephant that has sundered her bonds, we dwell without taints. Welcome indeed was our coming into the presence of the Best of Buddhas! The three true knowledges (vijjā) have been attained; the Buddha's teaching (sāsana) has been done. The four analytic insights (paṭisambhidā), and these eight liberations (vimokkha) as well, and the six superknowledges (chaḷabhiññā) have been realized; the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed did the eighteen thousand bhikkhunīs, khattiya maidens with Yasavatī at their head, speak these verses in the presence of the Blessed One. The Apadāna of the Eighteen Thousand Khattiya-Maiden Therīs is concluded. The Apadāna of the Eighty-four Thousand Brahmin-Maiden Therīs, the Second (32) Variant readings (Siam Raṭṭha apparatus; Po. = older copies, Ma. = Burmese edition, Yu. = European/PTS edition): [1] Ma.: bhavā santi ….
