[540] Which is that form (rūpa) that is the tangible-object sense base (phoṭṭhabbāyatana)?
The earth element (paṭhavī-dhātu), the fire element (tejo-dhātu), the air element (vāyo-dhātu); that which is hard, soft, smooth, rough, pleasant to the touch, painful to the touch, heavy, light — that tangible object (phoṭṭhabba), invisible (anidassana) and impinging (sappaṭigha), which one has touched, or touches, or will touch, or may touch with the body, itself invisible and impinging — this too is a tangible object, this too is the tangible-object sense base, this too is the tangible-object element (phoṭṭhabba-dhātu). This is that form that is the tangible-object sense base.
