[602] Which is that form (rūpa) which is external (bāhira), not the base (vatthu) of feeling (vedanā) born of eye-contact (cakkhusamphassa), … of perception (saññā), … of volition (cetanā), … of eye-consciousness (cakkhuviññāṇa)? The form sense base (rūpāyatana) … edible nutriment (kabaḷiṅkāra āhāra) — this is that form which is external, not the base of eye-consciousness. Which is that form which is internal (ajjhattika), the base of eye-consciousness? The eye sense base (cakkhāyatana) — this is that form which is internal, the base of eye-consciousness. Which is that form which is internal, not the base of eye-consciousness? The ear sense base (sotāyatana) … the body sense base (kāyāyatana) — this is that form which is internal, not the base of eye-consciousness.
