[1080] Therein, which are the nine roots (hetu)? Three wholesome roots, three unwholesome roots, three indeterminate (abyākata) roots.
Therein, which are the three wholesome roots? Non-greed (alobha) is a wholesome root, non-hatred (adosa) is a wholesome root, non-delusion (amoha) is a wholesome root. These are the three wholesome roots.
Therein, which are the three unwholesome roots? Greed (lobha) is an unwholesome root, hatred (dosa) is an unwholesome root, delusion (moha) is an unwholesome root. These are the three unwholesome roots.
Therein, which are the three indeterminate roots? Non-greed, non-hatred, and non-delusion, whether as the result (vipāka) of wholesome phenomena (dhammā) or in functional-indeterminate (kiriyābyākata) phenomena. These are the three indeterminate roots.
