[122] Another six elements (dhātu): the element of sensuality (kāmadhātu), the element of ill will (byāpādadhātu), the element of cruelty (vihiṃsādhātu), the element of renunciation (nekkhammadhātu), the element of non-ill will (abyāpādadhātu), and the element of non-cruelty (avihiṃsādhātu).
Therein, what is the element of sensuality? Thinking (takka), thought (vitakka), intention (saṅkappa), fixation (appanā), firm fixation (byappanā), application of the mind (cetaso abhiniropanā), wrong intention (micchāsaṅkappa), connected with sensuality — this is called the element of sensuality. Making the Avīci hell the limit below and including the Paranimmitavasavattī gods above, whatever aggregates (khandha), elements, and sense bases (āyatana) within this interval have their sphere here and are included here — form (rūpa), feeling (vedanā), perception (saññā), volitional formations (saṅkhārā), consciousness (viññāṇa) — this is called the element of sensuality.
Therein, what is the element of ill will? Thinking, thought, … wrong intention, connected with ill will — this is called the element of ill will. Or else, with regard to the ten grounds of resentment (āghātavatthu): resentment (āghāta) of mind, repugnance, repulsion, antagonism, irritation, indignation, utter indignation, hatred (dosa), intense hatred, utter hatred, malevolence of mind, mental animosity, anger (kodha), becoming angry, the state of being angry, hatred, hating, the state of hating, malevolence, becoming malevolent, the state of being malevolent, opposition, antagonism, ferocity, abruptness, displeasure of mind — this is called the element of ill will.
Therein, what is the element of cruelty? Thinking, thought, … wrong intention, connected with cruelty — this is called the element of cruelty. Here someone harasses beings with the hand, or with a clod, or with a stick, or with a knife, or with a rope, or with one thing or another: that which is of such a kind — harrying, harassing, hurting, injuring, provoking, enraging, doing violence to others — this is called the element of cruelty.
Therein, what is the element of renunciation? Thinking, thought, … right intention (sammāsaṅkappa), connected with renunciation — this is called the element of renunciation. All wholesome phenomena (kusalā dhammā), too, are the element of renunciation.
Therein, what is the element of non-ill will? Thinking, thought, … right intention, connected with non-ill will — this is called the element of non-ill will. That which is loving-kindness (mettā) toward beings, the act of loving-kindness, the state of loving-kindness, the deliverance of mind that is loving-kindness (mettācetovimutti) — this is called the element of non-ill will.
Therein, what is the element of non-cruelty? Thinking, thought, intention, fixation, firm fixation, application of the mind, right intention, connected with non-cruelty — this is called the element of non-cruelty. That which is compassion (karuṇā) toward beings, the act of compassion, the state of compassion, the deliverance of mind that is compassion (karuṇācetovimutti) — this is called the element of non-cruelty.
