[347] Which phenomena (dhammā) are unwholesome (akusala)?
On whatever occasion an unwholesome mind (citta) has arisen — accompanied by joy (somanassa-sahagata), associated with view (diṭṭhigata-sampayutta), with prompting (sasaṅkhārena) … accompanied by joy, dissociated from view (diṭṭhigata-vippayutta) … accompanied by joy, dissociated from view, with prompting — having a form as object (rūpārammaṇa) … or a dhamma as object (dhammārammaṇa), or with reference to whatever [object]: on that occasion, with ignorance (avijjā) as condition (paccaya), a volitional formation (saṅkhāra) [arises]; with the volitional formation as condition, consciousness (viññāṇa); with consciousness as condition, mentality (nāma); with mentality as condition, the sixth sense base (chaṭṭhāyatana); with the sixth sense base as condition, contact (phassa); with contact as condition, feeling (vedanā); with feeling as condition, craving (taṇhā); with craving as condition, resolution (adhimokkha); with resolution as condition, existence (bhava); with existence as condition, birth (jāti); with birth as condition, aging-and-death (jarāmaraṇa). Thus is the origin of this whole mass of suffering (dukkha).
