[659] "With the stilling of thought (vitakka) and examination (vicāra)": there is thought; there is examination.
Herein, what is thought? That which is thinking, thought, … right thought (sammāsaṅkappa) — this is called thought.
Herein, what is examination? That which is examining, examination, repeated examination, close examination, the continuous connection and sustained observation of the mind (citta) — this is called examination.
Thus this thought and this examination are calmed, quieted, stilled, gone to rest, utterly gone to rest, destroyed, utterly destroyed, dried up, utterly dried up, brought to an end. Therefore it is said: "with the stilling of thought and examination."
